Checking in on my mom’s 2004 Camry SE V6 (yes, the one with the wing), I noticed that after 13 years and 240,000 miles she only has door dings on the gaurd panels. I’m astounded because my 2006 Amanti has dings everywhere EXCEPT the chrome guard panels. Amazing! Alright, off to work we go. I have a preselected interview/meeting in a couple hours to be part of the company’s Special Projects Group. I’m going to request MSO Orion Purple name badges or no deal!

They absolutely worked. I had them on my GTP and they took the parking lot hits vs. my doors.

I have them on my Passat (2001) and the car only has a few dings. The 2015 Odyssey has them, but is still full of dings because the car is so damned huge, everybody hits it and the sheet metal is paper thin. You have to get really lucky on those moldings and hope they line up perfectly with the asshole parked next to you. A few inches higher or lower, useless.

SE V6 rolling on fifteens instead of sixteens?

Sorry, LE V6 with the spoiler. Thanks for catching that! Now I’m wondering if it’s a 2003...I can’t ever remember my mom’s car.

They worked all right, which is why they were actually an extra cost option in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and manufacturers would make a big deal about including them as standard (usually as part of a package of luxury features like map pockets, radio, defroster, carpet, and wheel covers).

They’ve been deleted on most new cars to allow for cleaner lines, at the expensive of practicality. Kind of like the nonfunctional modern bumpers and the gun slit greenhouses, form trumps function.

Rub strips were even better in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, when they were just black rubber so they didn’t need to be touched up after doing their damned jobs.
